Navigating Life and College with Type 1 Diabetes: Eversense Stories

Diagnosis

My journey with diabetes started during my senior year of high school. It began with feeling excessively thirsty and making way too many bathroom trips at night. It didn't seem like a big deal at first, but when my blood sugar tested off the charts, it was clear something was wrong. I ended up in the ER over Mother's Day weekend and got the diagnosis - not really how I had planned to start my college journey.

Obviously, there is a huge learning curve when adapting to life with diabetes. For me one of the biggest challenges was managing my diet. I was a total sweet tooth before, but now I stick to diet sodas and indulge in sweets only occasionally. It's about making choices that set me up for a healthier future while keeping me feeling good right now.

College Life

I’m currently studying at the Concordia University Irvine, as a D1 swimmer, my schedule can be pretty demanding, but when I am not in the pool or library, I enjoy hanging out with friends at the beach and playing intramural sports.

I’m thankful for my Eversense CGM because it has minimized the disruptions that are bound to happen while living with type 1. Unlike other CGMs constant audible alerts, Eversense is discreet, with the ability to vibrate rather than beep during lectures. I keep a close eye on my levels, especially around big swim meets. Eating right and managing insulin are crucial to keeping my performance on track.

Eversense

Choosing Eversense was a game-changer for me. I struggled with losing sensors when I tried other CGMs. Eversense is great because I trust it to stay on, or I can take off the transmitter and then just put it back on after my activities. The insertion process was straightforward, and I've had four sensors so far, all with the 180-day lifespan.

For anyone considering a switch to Eversense from traditional CGMs, I'd say go for it. The ability to remove the transmitter when needed and its reliable performance are what sold me on the system. Plus, the discreetness, during activities like swimming, is a huge bonus.

Moving Forward

If there's any advice I could give to someone newly diagnosed with diabetes, it's this: take it one day at a time. Don't stress too much over highs and lows - everyone has them. And for college-bound folks with diabetes, let your friends know about your condition. It's reassuring to have people who understand and can help if needed.

Overall, I'm optimistic about the future. Diabetes hasn't stopped me from living my life - it's just made me more mindful of my health. And with tools like Eversense, managing my diabetes and lifestyle has never felt easier.
